It holds orienteering events open to the public on most weekends between September - June in the greater Washington DC area, most commonly in state and national parks in Virginia and Maryland. QOC is one of the approximately 60 clubs authorized to conduct orienteering events by the national federation for the sport of orienteering, Orienteering USA (formerly the United States Orienteering Federation). Some of the first orienteering events in the US were conducted by the Quantico Marine Base Physical Fitness Academy in 1967 and 1968. These formed the basis for the Quantico Orienteering Club, which outgrew its ties to the Marine Base long ago and is now a fully independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Membership in the organization is optional, with about half of the participants at most events being non-members.
